Campio App

During my postgraduate studies in UX/Product Design, I worked with an amazing team to create the Campio – mobile app for families traveling by camper. Our project challenge was to improve the experience of families with children in planning their camper trip across Europe. We have gone through all stages of producing a digital product: User Needs Research, Strategy, Modeling, Prototyping and Usability Testing.

My role was to design key scenarios and prototypes: Create a plan, Create a plan template, Edit paln, Plan settings. I also designed two mini scenarios: Adding a destination and Adding notes. I was also responsible for creating the main persona of Michał Harcerz, visual identification and main UI/UX concepts.

A travel plan is more than just a plan. It becomes a travel story. It holds all the memories and emotions of planning together and sharing with others. Creating a plan is a simple and easy way to step into the world of family adventure lovers and become part of a community that supports, inspires, and provides a sense of security.

USER NEEDS RESEARCH

In-depth interviews (IDI)

Our research objective was to explore the perspectives of both inexperienced and regular camper travellers. We conducted 12 interviews. Three-quarters of the participants travelled with two or three children, most of whom were of school age. A quarter of the respondents owned their own camper.

Audience Group

Research indicates that our primary audience is urban, middle-class professionals aged 35-44 with children aged 6-12, including business owners and well-paid employees.

I wish my children felt the same way about the camper as I do.

Michał, father of 2 children

It would be great if I could mark points on the map, with the distance and time automatically calculated. That way, I could revisit it later and add notes.

Iza, mother of 4 children

Outside of Poland, it is important to pay attention to regulations, fees, vignettes, and camping rules.

Jan, father of 2 children

I know that many people who use campers often prefer wild camping, and they are happy with it—it makes sense. Personally, I felt a bit scared when camping in the wild.

Monika, mother of 3 children

Executive Summary

Feeling Safe

Traveling by camper requires knowledge and experience. The lack of information about camping and routes causes stress and disappointment. A solution is needed that provides up-to-date information.

Save Time

Searching for and verifying information is time-consuming. A product that provides the desired information in a friendly and fast way will enhance the camper travel experience.

Camper Community

The tool will be continuously updated if it is used by users, which is why it is important to create a community centered around the product with the ability to comment.

Main Persona

A representative of the largest group of respondents someone with little experience in camper travel. This is associated with greater anxiety, a stronger need for planning, and a reliance on support in organizing various stages of the journey.

Defined Problems

01

Chaotic planning

a route in several places without the possibility of modifying plans and taking into account the needs of children. Stress and disappointment due to the time-consuming task and insufficient knowledge.

02

Difficulty in finding reliable knowledge

Incomplete information about the rules for driving a camper in a given country. Outdated information about entering cities or the amount of fees.

03

Difficulty finding cool places

such as proven accommodation and regional tourist or cultural attractions suitable for children in terms of age, interests and activity level.

04

Searching information on your own

The need to analyze a large number of comments on blogs or camper groups. Lack of information exchange in one place intended strictly for family travel with children.

05

No attractions for children

The need to keep children occupied and entertained while on the move. Spending time in a small space is a real challenge.

06

Sense of insecurity while traveling

Being unable to fully enjoy a dream trip due to worries and challenges faced along the way—spending more time fixing problems than actually relaxing.

Value Proposition

01

A flexible travel planning template

that lets you modify trip stages while considering children’s needs − providing a well-structured itinerary with helpful recommendations for each step of the journey.

02

Reliable access to essential travel knowledge

including camper regulations by country, weather conditions, fees, and other important details.

03

Details on local tourist and cultural attractions

tailored to children’s age, interests, and preferred acti1vity level.

04

Community building

Sharing information and experiences with fellow camper travelers. Enjoying the journey together by adding comments and photos to the travel itinerary.

05

Enriching the travel experience

Experiencing unforgettable moments. In the PREMIUM option, providing children with an analog diary to create and collect travel memories.

06

Providing families with a sense of security

Allowing them to share their location and travel plans with loved ones, as well as exchange alerts visible to app users.

Key insights from the competitor analysis

The main competitors are apps focused on Google Maps and accommodation searches. Our approach, however, is designed to directly address the unique needs of families traveling in camper vans with kids.

Travel market

The camper travel market has been growing rapidly since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Target audience

The target audience primarily chooses this form of travel for its flexibility in changing plans and the opportunity to reconnect with nature.

Security

Polish families with children want to travel by camper, but they also seek a sense of security and comfort.

VISUAL DESIGN

Logo Campio

My role was to design the application logo.

Colors

In the Campio app, which is still in the mid-fidelity stage, there is only one primary green color in four color variations. When choosing colors, their symbolism in the context of the application’s theme was important.

Green

The color green has always been associated with nature and the environment. Green symbolizes optimism and happiness, as well as safety and trust.

White

The color white is a defining feature of most camper van. White is a symbol of new beginnings and is also associated with trust and providing assistance.

Black

The color black symbolizes experience. In the application, it primarily serves as a contrast and is used as the main text color.

Typography

We decided to use the popular, geometric Roboto font. The font is used in Google Maps, Google Play, and YouTube.

APPLICATION MODELLING

Wireflows & User Flow

My role was to design key scenarios and prototypes for the application: Creating the first travel plan, Editing the plan and Editing the plan settings.

Key insights from the application modelling

The core functionality of our app is focused on creating travel itineraries and using pre-made templates shared by other users. We decided to place action buttons in visible places for easy access. We focus on supporting the process of planning a trip, which is one of the most time-consuming tasks both before and during a trip.

Menu

We decided that the application menu would consist of three elements that we consider most important: My plans, Inspirations and Search.

Map

Easy access to the map will be an important feature of the app. We decided that the map would take up a significant part of the home screen.

Navigation

The application will not have navigation. The user will be easily redirected to Google Maps..

PROTOTYPE

Onboarding

The user can browse and use the basic features of the app without needing to log in. However, to save their plans, share plans or checklists, they will need an account in the app.

Create a plan

The primary function of Campio is to create travel plans. Users generate a plan on a predefined starting point, endpoint, and the number of days. These are the only required criteria to create a plan. Additionally, users have the option to choose from three different route proposals: a fast route, an attraction-based route, and a nature-focused route. These route themes are tailored to the interests of campers, particularly those traveling with children.

Attractions

The three routes recommended by the app are the answer to our design challenges: How to manage children during the trip? How to save parents time so that they don’t have to search for attractions on their own? We offer users three routes that show from the beginning that during their trip they will see interesting places (proven, safe and child-friendly), and the kids will experience a bit of survival and a bit of fun.

Ready travel plan

The parent receives a ready travel proposal. All the most important information is in one place. Nothing is lost. The trip is pre-planned. This reduces stress, introduces organization and facilitates further modifications.

My Prototpes

My role was to design key scenarios and prototypes for the application: Creating the first travel plan, Editing the plan and Editing the plan settings. I also designed several mini scenarios: Adding a new destination and notes to the plan.

TESTING

Characteristics of respondents

The target audience for our product is families with children. They are primarily individuals aged 35 to 50 from the middle class. They typically own a business or have a well-paid job and live in urban areas.
We personally surveyed 10 respondents who had taken at least 1 camper trip with at least 1 child under the age of 16.

Conclusions and Recommendations

We categorized the issues observed during testing into three groups based on their impact on the app’s usability: critical, significant, and minor.

We identified 3 critical issues related to navigation, travel plan approval, and the Campio assistant feature.

Among the 8 significant issues, the main concerns were defining key user functions, improving UX writing.

Lastly, the 3 minor issues primarily involved information presentation.

SUMMARY

Two ways of creating a travel plan

The user research phase revealed two distinct groups: more experienced and less experienced users. For each group, I designed convenient methods for creating a plan. Editing and modifying each stage of the journey is equally accessible for both options.

Full travel plan

Designed for less experienced users who need inspiration, guidance, and route comparisons.

Blank template

For more advanced individuals who already have a plan in mind and know where they want to go.

Future

The user testing phase was a very good experience for us! The group of people we tested confirmed our belief that the application meets the needs of those planning to travel with children in a camper around Europe!
